Yesterday was my first time at a comic con and it was quite a day! My father dropped me off at the Javits Center before going to work around 9:30. I went in, checked my coat, and almost immediately ran into ngmaster who was with a friend. (*waves to Dave* Sorry we didn’t get more of a chance to talk yesterday. ^_^;) And I found the line for tickets was already coiling around inside the convention center!
So, I got on line and was finally able to buy my ticket about 2 hours and 15 minutes later. X_X; I was expecting a badge but only got a wristband. And about 20 minutes after I got my ticket, it was announced there wouldn’t be anymore tickets sold. So, my brother who had planned to go with one of his friends and arrived much later, ended up not being able to get tickets. He claims they beat the system though because they went downtown to Forbidden Planet and bought weekend passes there. :-P
By the time I was finished changing into costume and made it back over to the little stage where the cosplay contest was, the contestants were getting ready to go on. I was hoping to get there in time for the morning session but there was an afternoon one too so that was okay. Watched the walk-ons, met the contest coordinator dj ranma, filled out an entry form, and then wandered off to do other stuff.
Sat in a Tokyopop panel for a bit, had lunch (boy, the food at the Javits is expensive!), and read half of vol. 1 of Magic Knight Rayearth in the manga library before heading back to the costume contest stage. I was expecting some cosplay.com people I’d met previously to be there but didn’t see them. (wonder if the ticket situation had something to do with it) Entered the costume contest, got photographed, went onstage, and talked with the judges for a couple of minutes on how I made the costume.
Did a quick survey of the exhibitor’s area after the costume contest. With the con being at the Javits Center and only open to the trade for part of Friday, I had expected it to be more like a trade show but it turned out to be much like a dealer’s room at previous cons I’d attended, just with different merchandise. As soon as I walked in, I noticed a table selling the Nancy Drew graphic novels. I’ve been meaning to look into those but didn’t find them at bookstores the couple of times I remembered to look. The writer was at the booth too and autographed the two volumes I bought. Hmm… I’ve thought about doing a classic 1930s Nancy costume before. Maybe, I could use the idea for a future comic con.
And I finally decided to buy the Fruits Basket artbook after only flipping through it at a couple of cons last year. The dealer I got it from also had Japanese FB volumes up to 19. I was a bit tempted to buy some considering how slow the Tokyopop releases have gotten but refrained since I don’t know any Japanese and wasn’t sure if I would be able to track down translations online. ^_^;;
Went back at seven to hear the costume contest results, which included 5 places each for novice and journeyman divisions. I was surprised at the end when they announced that I had won Best of Show! O_O At first, I thought the judges must have meant someone else because they mentioned embroidery and I hadn’t done any on my Lili costume. ^_^; (Or do hand-stitched buttonholes count?) I do think my Lili coat has some of my best tailoring but it was only my second cosplay and I never thought of it as potential Best of Show material. With two awards now and the second one being a Best of Show, I think it’s time to retire this outfit from competition. I’d still like to get some more wearings out of it for regular hall cosplay though since this is only the second con where I’ve worn it.
Picked up my prize and quickly put my costume stuff back in its bag before going outside to meet my father who was waiting. Got home and finally looked through my prize bag to discover a huge pile of anime and manga! I got:
The Galaxy Railways vol. 1-2
Case Closed 2-disc set with episodes 1-9
Desert Punk vol. 1
Samurai 7 vol. 1
Gatchaman box set with vol. 9-10 plus bonus features disc
Alien Nine box set with vol. 1-3 of the manga plus DVD
Pilgrim Jager vol. 1-3
So, the day turned out pretty well despite a rough start. Next time though, I’m definitely going out to one of the stores selling tickets and picking mine up there! They weren’t stilettos or anything like that but the heels I was wearing for my costume weren’t the greatest for standing around for hours. ^_^;;
